Week 5 (October 1, 2)

Preschool this week was SHORT again. We still had plenty to do when the week ended, but I guess that's better than having too little to do. We talked about making predictions, and that sometimes predictions are RIGHT and sometimes they're WRONG. And both are okay, because a prediction is a guess. We made charts, the kids labeled them 1-6 and they rolled their die and plotted dots in the correct column. Before they started, they drew a star in the column they thought would have the most dots. It was interesting to see the results.

Jeff wouldn't make his prediction until he saw which one was "winning" :)

We finished our dinosaur themed lessons last week, but Logan and Jeff were still loving playing with them during free choice.

We have created a quiet book time right before our closing circle time. It is a nice time for the kids to wind down, getting ready to listen to some stories and sing songs and getting ready to go home.

Spinning tops works on fine motor skills and can be a very entertaining game with lots of friends playing all together. They tried to count as high as they could before their tops fell. They tried spinning them on top of things, like books, or in their hands.

We read a book about a very emotional pumpkin, and created our own version. The kids ended up making the faces while they drew in the jack-o-lantern faces to match the words on each page. Jeff is making "ANGRY".

Ryan is making "WORRIED".

Hawken was making "SCARED"

I realize that I only took pictures of the negative emotions, but there was also, "HAPPY" and "EXCITED" too. :) The kids wrote the title and author on the cover page. They are still learning spatial awareness, but all the letters are there. Good job boys! Logan wanted a model but didn't want me to tell him where to to write, and did a great job all by himself.

Snack time is always an adventure. The kids, on their own, started building letters with their pretzel sticks and apple slices. They now know that I take a LOT of pictures of them and ask for it when they know they've done something cool.

With any group of four year olds, disputes come up sometimes. This group is such a GOOD group of kids, they can usually figure out solutions to their problems all on their own. They are pretty sensitive to each others feelings and always try to include everyone. That makes my job a lot easier. Here, they were talking about how many good guys/bad guys there should be in the game they were playing.

Small groups doing word building. They love this activity and each kid tried out a work page they didn't try before.  They are beginning to sound out some words now and love activities like this.

Race cars during free choice time. I don't know why it had taken me five weeks to figure out that race cars + these boys = FUN! They made ramps all over the school room.

Playing games is another of our favorites. A new game called "I See Something" (a variation of I Spy) has been a fun one to try out. It has a spinner with adjectives, and the kids have to look around the room and see something that fits that word. Some are easy, like yellow, small, long. Some words are harder to find, like slimy, bumpy, heavy... It's good fun.

The monkey bars under the bridge were a favorite this week. Plus we had NICE WEATHER! Hooray!

Outside, Hawken and Logan found a tiny inchworm. Ryan looked at it up close, but didn't want to touch it. Logan and Jeff held it for a while before Jeff decided it was too gross and put it back in the grass. How they ever spotted this TINY little bug, I will never know.
